About Harvard Neighbors

Harvard Neighbors is a volunteer and membership organization that for over 120 years has worked to create a sense of community for the members of this large University.

Through a wide variety of activities, we help both newcomers and more established members to become acquainted with one another.  Each year is filled with exciting events, such as the Open House, an Ice Cream Social, Apple Social, Cranberry Social, Thanksgiving Demonstration and Celebration, a Holiday Cheer party in December, Tasting Events (which might feature chocolate, wine, beer,  tea, local cheese, and honey),  Regional and international cooking demonstrations; Community Service and Outreach evenings, Celtic Nigh, Spring Celebration, Tea and Talks with featured speakers from around the university, and the Annual Meeting featuring a faculty member presenting significant new research and its impact on our lives.

Our meeting space and office are located at Loeb House, 17 Quincy Street in Cambridge. Our volunteers welcome and offer support to recent arrivals; we plan and host a variety of social events; and we offer special activities and social opportunities for people who share common interests.

Organized and led by volunteer members, these groups meet around a specific topic or interest on a regular basis (weekly or monthly) during the academic year. Group size may range from 5 to 30 participants.  Harvard Neighbors currently has 21 active groups that range in focus from Art and Exploration, Knitting, Green Living, Memoir Writing and Yoga Classes to multiple English Conversation Practice groups, French, Italian and Japanese Conversation groups, and Lunch-time; French book clubs to “Out and About” gatherings to explore the Boston area.  For a full list, see the Harvard Neighbors website:

We can also help answer your questions about Harvard, Cambridge and the Boston Area.

Joining Harvard Neighbors will involve you with a group of friendly people from different areas of the University. We welcome and depend on volunteers' time and talents. Let us know if you would like to volunteer. You will be supporting our goal of keeping Harvard a welcoming and helpful place.

Membership is free and it is open to active and retired Harvard faculty and staff (including visiting scholar and researchers, post-doc fellows and program fellows) and their spouses or partners.

We look forward to meeting you!
