About

What We Do

Back in 1894, Mrs. Eliot, the wife of the President of Harvard University, saw the need for a place where spouses of faculty could have a place at Harvard. With the same spirit, Harvard Neighbors has adapted to society’s changes to include staff, faculty, retirees, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and their spouses and partners. Here is a historical timeline to show you highlights of our history.

We offer entertaining and educational activities for members to enjoy and connect with others in the university community. The organization is as strong as its members. We depend on members rolling up their sleeves to lead interest groups, organize events and serve on committees and the board.

Traditionally we hold an open house and outreach activities such as the ice cream social and an apple giveaway. Other events include the Thanksgiving dinner demonstration, holiday party, spring celebration, and international cultural activities. As a tip of the hat to Mrs. Eliot, we have Tea and Talk, where we host a speaker and provide refreshments. At the end of the academic year, an annual meeting is held with a presentation by the president of Harvard neighbors featuring a guest speaker.

Within the university’s administration, Harvard Neighbors falls under the purview of the Faculty Club and Central Administration. In addition, we have a staff member to support the Interest Group Leaders, Committee Members, and Board. Here are the Bylaws which define our mission, membership, and organizational structure.

Our History

The College Teas Association (CTA), founded in 1894 under the presidency of Charles William Eliot by Mrs. Grace H. Eliot and fifteen other faculty wives, welcomed the wives of newly appointed members of the faculty at formal teas designed to help the newcomers build lasting friendships. Over 120 years later, Harvard Neighbors is as strong as ever bringing the University together through social events, interest groups, educational programming opportunities and more.
